Groggily Made Room

Hey there beautiful soul!
I used to think “giving something up for God” had to be dramatic. Recently, it’s been quieter - those early hours when the world is still and my pillow begs me to stay have become my offering. Why? Because more than comfort or answers, all I really want is to be with Him.
As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for You, my God” - Psalm 42:1
William McDowell’s lyrics conveys it perfectly too - “There’s nothing like Your presence, Lord” But, oh! How many times I’ve whispered, “Just five more minutes, Lord,” only to feel His gentle nudge to “Come.” Then CeCe Winans 'Million Miles' lyrics often drift through my mind: “Better is one day with You than a million more, a million miles away.
I’d tried to make sleep my sacrifice before, aching for the quiet talk, but it never stuck. I’ve struggled for years; distractions stealing my time, exhaustion draining my energy, other priorities tugging at my attention. Indeed, “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy ... ” - John 10:10.
Reflecting on those earlier attempts, I can see how the enemy fought harder because he knew what these mornings would birth. If he couldn’t take my faith, he’d gladly steal my mornings. Or maybe it was me in the way, chasing performance instead of pursuit. This time, I changed that. I came to show up for an audience of One. All I wanted was Him, nothing else. Not to prove anything, but to pour out love to the One who first desired me. And it felt different, like Lamentations 3:22-23 come alive:
Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for His compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness. - Lamentations 3:22-23
Forty days of making Him room (okay, minus a few sleepy slip-ups), but I showed up in the hidden, carved-out space in my closet. Groggy, late, and tired, yet showing up. Some mornings, just quiet. It wasn’t easy, but God. It wasn’t guilt waking me anymore; it was grace and mercy.
The more I kept our morning date, the more He filled me up. Some mornings I would stumble in half-asleep and whisper, “God, I desire to meet You early. I am here. I have risen by Your strength. Even if its messy, sleepy, short or silent, let it be enough. I’m still Yours. I trust you to meet me in the stillness. Led me deeper”
He met me - every single time.
The real testimony isn’t that I finished this fast; it’s that grace intervened. The only requirement was to show up, and grace did the rest. It met me in every sleepy stumble, turned them into sacred moments, and gave me life where I felt empty. Grace filled the gap between my effort and His presence.
Grace was there along the way too, answering every little prayer to wake me up, to give me energy, to nudge me out of bed, to guide me through the morning’s rhythm. Grace didn’t just wait at the finish line; it walked beside me, one groggy prayer at a time.
So once again, Jesus crushed the enemy’s plans, resurrecting my quiet talks into living proof of His promise as in the second part of John 10:10:
... I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly”.
Turns out, the fast wasn’t about losing sleep. It was about groggily making room and finding life. And maybe a little proof that even half-awake obedience can still make hell nervous.
Stay tuned, stay blessed!
Harmoniously yours!
